The flag icon on Instagram can mean two different things.
Flagging a Message
In the past, Instagram users could flag messages as important so that they could easily find them later. To do this, users would tap on the flag icon next to the message. This would add an orange flag to the message, making it stand out in the user’s inbox.
This feature was discontinued in 2022. Instagram has not given a reason for the discontinuation, but it is possible that it was not being used very often.
Reporting an Account
The flag icon can also be used to report an Instagram account. This can be done if the user believes that the account is violating Instagram’s community guidelines. To report an account, users can tap on the three dots in the top right corner of the account’s profile page and select “Report.”
Instagram will then review the report and take action if it believes that the account has violated its community guidelines. This could include disabling the account, removing content, or taking other actions.
